About the “Success is in the Bag” Back to School Program
You are invited to participate in the First Annual “Success is in the Bag” Back to School Community Event, hosted by Center for Family Services, Inc. We hope you can join us on August 8th at Diamond Park 9:00AM to 2:00PM!
Why an event?
Center for Family Services has been collecting new book bags and school supplies and distributing them each August for the past 11 years. We hit a record breaking milestone by serving 624 Crawford County Children in 2014. Our goal is to double the number and fill book bags for 1,200 students this year. With the opportunity to reach so many children (pre-K through 12th) and their families, a community event is a great idea.
Connecting families to opportunities is the goal. August 8th is also a Second Saturday event at the Market House. We anticipate a “cross marketing” of events and a boost in event attendees, as a result. The more the merrier!
Who should participate?
The program serves a wide range of student grades and ages. It is open to any child attending school in Crawford County (public, home school, private or cyber). The variety of age groups, geographic locations and interests make this a perfect opportunity for outreach for educational, recreational, and athletic organizations. Looking for program participants or volunteers? This is the perfect place.
Non-profit and For Profit businesses are welcome to participate.
How can you participate?
You are welcome to put up a table with information … or host a workshop! Some of the ideas our community partners have, include:
• Health Screenings ~ Meadville Medical Center
• Low Cost Hair Cuts and tours ~ Laurel Technical Institute
• Yoga demonstration ~ Brookside Yoga
• Back to School Safety ~ Meadville Police Department
• Karate Demonstration ~ Flying Tigers Martial Arts
• Tours and performance ~ Academy Theatre
Laurel Technical Institute has graciously offered the use of classroom space if needed!

Center for Family Services is teaming up with Armstrong’s Antlers and Anglers
Center for Family Services, Inc. is teaming up with Armstrong during the annual Antlers and Anglers event, to help provide food and funds for agency programs.
Armstrong’s Antlers and Anglers is enjoyed each Fall by hundreds of adults and children. The event offers a variety of family friendly activities and learning experiences, as well as vendors with fishing and hunting items. This year’s event will be held at the Crawford County Fairgrounds on September 26th and 27th from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Cost is $2.00 or two cans of non-perishable food for adults. Children 12 and under are free. Food donations and entrance fees collected will be donated to the Center for Family Services, Inc.
New this year is an “Outdoor Gear for a Good Cause” Hunting and Fishing gear and equipment drive and sale. Armstrong and Center for Family Services are collecting gently used “Outdoor” items to include in a flea market style booth at the Antlers and Anglers event. Items such as hunting or fishing clothing, rods and reels, bobbers and lures, calls, boots, archery equipment, hunting equipment (other than guns or ammunition) and more, are welcome. Please limit the donations to new or gently used items used for hunting or fishing.
Proceeds from the booth will assist Center for Family Services in providing warm winter coats for local children and adults. “The demand for warm coats begins in October and we are often scrambling to fill the need. Having a head start on funding to purchase coats is a great help.” says Center for Family Services Executive Director, Pam Jarrell.
The Winter Coat program helps upwards of 400 adults and children in Crawford County each year. The program relies on community donations of new and gently used coats. The Center for Family Services also holds coat drives later in the Fall. Monetary donations earmarked for the Winter Coat program help purchase coats in sizes that the agency doesn’t often receive. Low inventories of plus size and coats for teenagers is an annual issue. “The Outdoor Gear for a Good Cause booth is a wonderful way to give our Winter Coat program a boost.” says Jarrell.
How you can help
Bring your gently used hunting and fishing clothing, gear and equipment to the Center for Family Services or Armstrong offices by September 23. Donations may be tax deductible. No firearms or ammunition accepted.

Rock to fill the Food Pantry!
Join us, as Rick McGee and the Roadhouse Rockers fill the Conneaut Lake Park Volunteer Fire Hall with classic rock and blues. Not only will the hall be filled with great music, event attendees are encouraged to bring a bag of non-perishable food items along. We want to fill our Crawford County Food Pantries. Each event attendee, with at least one bag of food, will be entered to win a $100 gas card. Your $7 ticket fee does not include food or beverages, however there will be a cash bar and (possibly) food items available for purchase.
The Center for Family Services, Inc. manages the State and Federal food programs for Crawford County. While these programs are crucial to helping provide hunger relief in our community, many families are in need of additional assistance. Donated food helps supplement regular food boxes. Community donated food can also be used to help families who don’t qualify for the State and Federal programs, but are facing serious financial difficulties. Your monetary donations help CFS purchase food at lower prices in larger quantities.
